The Dead (banana) has Risen...
In the time that has passed since I last had a chance to post anything on here, my Super Dwarf Cavendish got infested with spider mites that it caught from a 5.00$ plant I bought at Hannaford's and subsequentially had to be chopped down by me and my butcher knife! It had gotten to about 4.5 feet high and was slowly turning a horrid shade of yellow. I didn't notice the mites until they were too numerous to combat. I dumped a bunch of systemic poison in the soil but when the mites have established themselves it generally doesn't do any good. So I abandoned all hope and hacked it down. That was almost a month ago. I hadn't seen any new growth since then so I put it in my basement near a well-window that is as big as a regular house window and gets ample indirect light. The root ball is so big that I have to keep it in the pot it was in when I killed it. Hopefully the poison that I put into the dirt will be enough to kill any remaining mites that were in the soil. I went down in the basement 2 days ago to empty the dehumidifier and lo and behold, there was a 1 inch shoot of green coming from the base of the old one! So there is hope that the banana will still make it after all. The poor thing has been through a lot: Scale, whiteflies, aphids, fungus gnats, and now spider mites. What next???!!!
